Some people collect fine art, others collect sports memorabilla, some collect thimbles, some line their walls with family portraits. My friend, Jack S. LOVES fishing! He has devoted an entire room to his hobby. What would a room devoted to fishing be without a Worm Dude T Shirt? Check out the pic’s while I ponder the thought.

This experiment revolves around using European Nightcrawlers (In picture above) as fishing bait.

I’ve sold a LOT of European Nightcrawlers to fisherman. I usually send them off with the reminder, “Now you never need to buy bait again”! Is it true? Can you easily raise your own Euro’s for perpetual bait?

Let’s see what happens in a controlled experiment.

If you are reading this blog, you probably are a worm lover, and think the pictures above are pretty cool. If you randomly found this website, you probably think you are in the middle of a NIGHTMARE.

Let’s take a look at some of the more common types of worms commercially available, and their purposes.

Only a few types of worms are recommended for composting. In my opinion, these are the three best types of worms for composting:

Red Wigglers
European Nightcrawlers
African Nightcrawlers

The reasons why these worms are great composters is because they share certain characteristics:
Top feeders
Voracious
Prolific in captivity

But, what if you want to raise worms for more than just composting?
Do you like to fish? Would you like NEVER to worry about whether or not the bait store has any worms left? Great Bait worms:

Canadian Nightcrawlers
European Nightcrawlers
Alabama Jumpers
African Nightcrawlers

The reasons why these worms are great bait worms is because they share certain characteristics:
Large size (Especially the Canadians)!

Want a great worm for your garden! Try Alabama Jumpers. I’ve never seen a stronger, more active worm. They are so distinctive, even the babies JUMP like crazy! Please understand, most commercially available worms are NOT suited to live in soil. Alabama Jumpers do well in heavy clay soil.

Always make sure you’re using the RIGHT worm for the Job!

Typical Red Wiggler next to a SUPERSIZED EURO!

Eisenia Fetida(Red Wigglers) are cool worms. They swarm food and turn it into wonderful castings. Eisenia Hortensis (European Nightcrawlers), are even cooler! They do everything that Red Wigglers do, but they don’t run like a typical crawler (NOTE: Any worm will run if conditions are not right). Another benefit…you can get them as BIG AS SLUGS!

Dr. Atkins was right…carbs will make you fat. I got these Euros so fat, they start looking translucent instead of pink! How did I do it? I happened to pick up a big box of variety pack oatmeal at Costco. In the variety pack, there are some packs of unflavored oatmeal (Yuck)! I said to myself, I’ll bet the worms will eat this stuff…so I threw them on top of the Euro bedding (Careful, grains can heat up if mixed in)…the next morning…all gone. I tried it again…same results. After about a week, I had a bin full of worms that looked like slugs!
