okay so not only have i had a bit of a problem with my worms running off, i’ve also got some problems with critter infestations.

at present i’ve got an infestation of what looks to be fruit fly larvae as well as perhaps some mites and even a couple red centipede-looking fellows. not a fan.

in any case, here are the steps i’m enacting immediately based on reading your, and other sites. let me know if this looks good or if you would try anything else.

1) no more feeding
2) freezing or microwaving all scraps before putting them into the box
3) adding another layer of pre-soaked brown paper over the top of the bin
4) discontinuing any composting of onions or ph-acidic foods until things have stabilized

anything else you’d recommend? i think my best bet seems to be to starve out the other folks and let the worms regroup with the paper. i was worried i’d lost my worms entirely but while trolling around i did find a good cluster of them on something so i think if i just let the box chill out and keep a light on them overnight i’m hoping they can start procreating and bringing my worm numbers back up again.

crossing my fingers,

/kit

Hi Kit,

Wow. If a bin has become that out of balance, I would recommend disgarding the contents, salvaging your remaining worms, and starting over.

Some Reminders:
Bedding is your friend. Lots and Lots of bedding. You can’t have too much.
Bury your scraps in the corner. Let the worms come to the food.
Do not put more scraps in the bin than your worms can process in a couple of days (Pre compost scraps outside of your bin, never in it). Since you think you’ve lost a lot of worms, you will need to build up your herd prior to putting in large amounts of scraps.
Manage your water so the bin isn’t soaked.

Remember, if other bugs can smell the rotting vegetation, they are going to swarm the bin. Your goal is to keep scraps well below the surface. The worms will find them.
